Trail Ratings Guide

Choose trails with wisdom, not ego

“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” — Proverbs 22:3

How to Use Ratings

Every trail system uses slightly different scoring, but most ratings are trying to answer the same question: How hard is it to safely complete this trail today?

  • • Difficulty can change with weather, snowmelt, and erosion.
  • • A “moderate” trail can become “difficult” after storms or traffic.
  • • Go with a group, especially when you’re new to an area.

CJD Rating Scale (Simple & Practical)

Our state pages use a simple scale that’s easy to understand. Always pair this with local guidance.

Easy
Stock-friendly
  • • Graded roads, mild terrain, minimal obstacles
  • • 4WD recommended, but traction is predictable
  • • Good first-time trail choice with a group
Easy–Moderate
Some obstacles
  • • Rocks/ruts/ledges possible, careful lines required
  • • Stock can do it with experience and smart spotting
  • • Recovery gear should be on board
Moderate
Mods recommended
  • • Regular obstacles; clearance and traction matter
  • • Lift/tires/armor help; driver experience important
  • • Expect to use 4LO and spotters
Moderate–Difficult
Built rigs
  • • Technical terrain; body damage risk increases
  • • Lockers/armor/winch often recommended
  • • Strong leadership and group discipline required
Difficult / Extreme
Advanced only
  • • Serious obstacles; rollover/repair risk
  • • Advanced driving, proper gear, experienced spotters
  • • Not recommended for new drivers or casual rides

What Can Change a Trail’s Difficulty?

Weather & conditions

  • • Rain turns dirt into slick clay
  • • Snowmelt raises water crossings
  • • Wind and storms create washouts

Traffic & erosion

  • • Deepening ruts
  • • Off-camber lines
  • • New rock exposure

A Faith-Forward Trail Mindset

If you’re unsure, choose the safer line, ask for a spot, or turn around. Wisdom is not weakness — it’s stewardship.
